Internet Service Providers Reduce Service Infrastructure Costs
Open Source Offers Deployment Options That Help Service Providers Increase Customer Profitability
San Mateo, CA – 2007-10-16 05:00:00 – Vyatta, the leader in Linux-based networking, today announced that BinFone Telecom, a wholesale VoIP provider, and OpenTelcom, a UK-based telecom and hosting services provider, are standardizing on Vyatta open-source networking solutions to drive down infrastructure costs and increase customer profitability.
Vyatta combines enterprise-class routing and security capabilities into an integrated, reliable, and commercially supported software solution, delivering twice the performance of proprietary network solutions at half the price. Vyatta is the only commercial networking solution that can be deployed on the customer's choice of standard x86 hardware, server blades, and standard virtualization solutions such as VMware and Xen. This flexibility allows service providers to reduce capital equipment costs, consolidate networking resources, and decrease per-customer power consumption and footprint.
BinFone opted for Vyatta after the failure of a Cisco system. BinFone was attracted to the flexibility and cost savings of Vyatta, and after installing the software on commodity hardware, found the open-source router extremely easy to use and maintain.
"Vyatta is very easy to deal with. I can throw it on commodity hardware. In a pinch I can go over to my local computer store for hardware. That's a huge advantage. If it breaks, I've got another box here. We keep a stash of spare 1U boxes, but not expensive Cisco hardware," said Justin Newman, president of BinFone.
For Vyatta customer OpenTelcom deployment speed and flexibility are paramount as the company builds out its network infrastructure and moves into new markets. With Vyatta, OpenTelcom has achieved throughput comparable to Cisco at about one-eighth the cost. OpenTelcom has experienced no downtime since installing Vyatta in November 2006, and the company has accomplished all its networking infrastructure goals using Vyatta on standard hardware – eliminating vendor lock-in.
"The flexibility of open-source solutions has proven popular in the service provider business. Our customers love that they can run applications of their choosing on the same hardware as their Vyatta networking solution," said Kelly Herrell, CEO of Vyatta. "In addition, the ability to virtualize routing and security functions has opened a whole new world of opportunities for service providers to consolidate hardware and monetize value added services in the data center and at the customer premise."
