Vyatta Appoints Tom Grennan as Vice President of Engineering
Cisco Veteran and Open-Source Champion Advocates for More Choice in Networking
San Mateo, CA – 2006-04-24 08:30:00 – Vyatta today announced that Tom Grennan has joined the team as vice president of engineering, responsible for development of new and existing open-source networking solutions. A seasoned networking executive and passionate open-source advocate, Grennan brings more than 23 years of software development and engineering experience to his role at Vyatta.
“As we continue to focus on developing the Open Flexible Router and building the Vyatta business, assembling a world-class team is essential to the achievement of our goals. Tom brings a passion for open source and technical networking expertise that will be invaluable to our development efforts and I’m pleased to welcome him into the Vyatta fold,” said Allen Leinwand, Vyatta’s Chairman.
Prior to joining Vyatta, Grennan was the vice president of engineering at Teak Technologies. As Cisco’s Director of Mid-Range Platform Software Development, Grennan developed the 7200/7300 routing and other advanced technology platforms. He founded and led AYR Networks, a company dedicated to developing open source software for high-end routers and switches. After AYR was acquired by Cisco Systems in 2002, Grennan championed the integration of AYR and Cisco’s IOS technologies. Prior to AYR, Grennan was Director of Engineering at Cisco where he developed key innovations in NetFlow Switching and Data Export, Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF), Distributed QoS, Parallel Express Forwarding Processor (PXF/Toaster), 7600 Optical Service Module (OSM), and the 7500 Versatile Interface Processor (VIP). Grennan has also held a variety of engineering management positions with Hitachi Computer Products, Pitney Bowes, and Sperry.
“I’ve long believed that open source would provide a jolt of innovation to re-energize the networking world. The benefits are myriad, but ultimately, open source brings choice, and Vyatta’s OFR represents networking nirvana – a flexible, low-cost router that’s capable of creating highly reliable infrastructure,” said Grennan. “The opportunity to be a part of the Vyatta team and guide the OFR development effort was one I could not pass up.”
Vyatta is developing the Open Flexible Router (OFR), a flexible, cost-effective, and secure alternative to the incumbent, closed-source solutions that dominate the market today. The company recently launched a community designed to bring together users and developers to shape the product and advance the cause of open-source networking. A beta version of the Vyatta OFR is currently available for download.
