Vyatta Welcomes Networking and Open-Source Technology Experts to Advisory Board
Industry Luminaries Simon Crosby and Dave Newman Lend Strategic Guidance as Vyatta Readies First Commercial-Grade Open-Source Route
San Mateo, CA – 2006-04-18 08:30:00 – Vyatta today welcomed two members to its newly created advisory board -- networking industry veteran Dave Newman, and XenSource CTO Simon Crosby. The advisory board brings together networking and open-source industry experts to provide advice and insight on product development and technology adoption issues to ensure that Vyatta’s open-source networking solutions are aligned with market needs.
Vyatta is developing the Open Flexible Router (OFR), a flexible, cost-effective, and secure alternative to the incumbent, closed-source solutions that dominate the market today. The company recently launched a community designed to bring together users and developers to shape the product and advance the cause of open-source networking. A beta version of the Vyatta OFR is currently available for download. For more information on Vyatta, or to join the Vyatta community and participate in building the first open, flexible router, go to www.vyatta.com.
About the Vyatta Advisory Board
Dave Newman brings more than 20 years of networking experience to his role as advisor to Vyatta. He has held numerous board positions, and currently serves on the board of directors for PathScale and Lightstorm Networks. Newman was previously vice president of engineering at Rapid City Communications (acquired by Bay Networks) and Alantec (merged with FORE Systems). He also held senior engineering positions at DEC and Fairchild Semiconductor. Dave has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Colorado State University and a B.S. in physics from City College of New York.
“I’ve been in the networking world since Ethernet was 10mb and ran on fat orange cable,” Newman said jokingly, “and I’m pleased to have the opportunity to lend my experience and perspective as an advisor to Vyatta. Networking is ripe for a disruptive technology like open source, and Vyatta’s Open Flexible Router holds the promise of providing a cost-effective alternative to the ‘one-size-fits-all’ solutions that users have been forced to accept from the dominant networking players today, for lack of a better option.”
Simon Crosby is CTO for XenSource, which provides the industry’s highest-performance virtualization technology, the open-source Xen hypervisor. He was previously principal engineer at Intel, leading strategic research in distributed autonomic computing, platform security and trust. Crosby founded CPLANE, Inc., a network optimization software vendor, and held the roles of president, CEO, and CTO. Prior to CPLANE, Crosby was a tenured faculty member at Cambridge University in the UK, where he led research on network performance and control and multimedia operating systems. He is the author of more than 35 research papers and patents.
“With Xen, we have seen that the power of open source lies in the community that is fostered around the technology,” said Crosby. “Where closed-source solutions rely on big companies to carve out large development budgets and hire top people, open source creates an environment of innovation by welcoming anybody and everybody that has something to contribute, and creating economic incentives for the broad adoption of a common open code base. I’m looking forward to helping Vyatta build its community around open-source networking.”
