Mozilla Executive Joins Vyatta Advisory Board

Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla Vice President of Engineering, Lends Expertise as Vyatta Readies Open Source Router

San Mateo, CA – 2006-05-09 08:00:00 – Vyatta today announced that Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering for Mozilla, has joined its recently created advisory board. The advisory board brings together networking and open-source industry experts to provide advice and insight on product development and technology adoption issues to ensure that Vyatta's open-source networking solutions are aligned with market needs. Schroepfer joins existing advisors Dave Newman, networking industry veteran, and Simon Crosby, CTO of XenSource.

Schroepfer was previously chief technology officer for Sun Microsystems' 450-person data center automation division, where he helped set the technical direction for architecture, industry standards, partnerships, and acquisition strategy for the business unit and had technical oversight for many of Sun's software product lines. Schroepfer was named a Distinguished Engineer, one of Sun's highest technical accolades. He came to Sun with its acquisition of CenterRun, which Schroepfer founded and served as chief architect and director of engineering. Prior to CenterRun, Schroepfer consulted for numerous startups to help them build initial technology infrastructure and hire engineering teams. Schroepfer also built the digital video effects software used in motion pictures such as Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Gladiator.

"Mozilla has demonstrated the ability of open source to produce software that is easy to use, innovative, and widely adopted. Tens of millions of internet users around the world have benefited from the innovations delivered in the Firefox browser," said Schroepfer. "I look forward to helping Vyatta accomplish the same thing in the network equipment market."

Vyatta is developing the Open Flexible Router (OFR), a flexible, cost-effective, and secure alternative to the incumbent, closed-source solutions that dominate the market today. The company recently launched a community designed to bring together users and developers to shape the product and advance the cause of open-source networking. A beta version of the Vyatta OFR is currently available for download.
