Routing & Security for Riverbed Steelhead Appliances

Consolidating WAN Optimization, Routing, and Security
Vyatta and Riverbed have partnered to deliver a consolidated edge device combining the Vyatta network OS with Riverbed Steelhead appliances. Adding Vyatta's routing and security software to the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP) enables enterprises to deploy a single best-of-breed edge device to connect, protect and optimize branch office networks.

Running Vyatta on Riverbed Steelhead appliances delivers:

  • Edge routing services (BGP, OSPF, RIP, and static routes)
  • IPSec and SSL-based OpenVPN for site-to-site and remote access VPN
  • Stateful packet inspection firewall
  • Intrusion prevention, web filtering, QoS and more
  • Reduced cost compared to separate appliances
  • Reduced space and power requirements
  • No need to stock spares of expensive, proprietary, hardware-based products

Vyatta and Riverbed have verified Vyatta's routing and security software runs in the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP). In this environment, Vyatta can provide full routing (BGP, OSPF, RIP, and static routes) and security features (stateful firewalling, NAT, VPN, IPS, etc.) In a typical configuration, Vyatta is deployed on the RSP and configured to operate on the WAN-side of the networking connection to process inbound traffic before the RSP passes the traffic to the Steelhead for processing for full Riverbed functionality and sent to the LAN. Traffic in the reverse direction is first accelerated by the standard Steelhead functionality, then processed by Vyatta and sent to the WAN.

Vyatta & Riverbed Joint Solution Brief

Today’s enterprise IT environments are focused on identifying ways to optimize performance and consolidate resources. While businesses are beginning to examine the benefits of cloud computing and virtualization for datacenter server, storage and application resources, it is also possible to enjoy those benefits today at the network-edge.
